This class will be held on July 2nd, at 11am at our onsite smithy in Palmer, Alaska. This class is for adults only as it’s long, involves using a grinder, and is intense.
What is a Sgian Dubh? A traditional Sgian Dubh is a small single edge knife worn as part of a Classic Scottish Highland outfit along with a kilt.
Join us for a 6 hour build on your custom hand forged Rustic Sgian Dubh. This class is going to give you: forge time, heat treating, grinding, handle making and fitting, and leatherwork all in one day.
You’ll start with a lightly worked billet and draw out the tang and the blade. Then you’ll move on to grinding the blade on our powder grinder. After that its time to heat treat the blade and then burn it into the handle. Once your handle is on you can sand it down and add a little carving or woodburning if you like. The final step will be sewing up the knife sheath and adding any decorative touches you like.
You will come out with a custom made Sgian Dubh, with your custom made handle, and a hand sewn sheath for your knife.
We provide everything you need for this project including safety glasses, aprons, tools, and materials. Please wear long pants, closed toe shoes, and tie back long hair for this class.
