What is a folk school?

Folk Schools, primarily focused on adult education, are unique institutions that emphasize skill development over academic qualifications. Initially more prevalent in Nordic countries like Germany and Switzerland, these schools have seen a rise in popularity in the United States. The concept traces back to Danish writer, philosopher, and pastor N. F. S. Grundtvig (1783–1872).

Over 150 years later, Folk Schools in the U.S. and globally are thriving, offering a diverse range of adult classes. These schools cover a wide array of crafts and skills, from herbalism and pottery to more niche arts like bucket making, blacksmithing, and sled making. The variety is nearly limitless, with new topics constantly emerging to meet a range of interests.

At Palmer Folk School in south-central Alaska, we aim to reinvigorate the spirit of Creative Adult Learning with hands-on classes in blacksmithing, coppersmithing, weaving, broom-making, painting, handwork and more.

If you’re traveling to Alaska and you’re looking for a unique experience or unusual class consider taking classes with us. We often offer short half day sessions where students create their own one of a kind product. Now that’s a souvenir.

We also offer blacksmithing homeschooling classes for ages 9-12, and 13-18 for anyone enrolled in homeschool. Or for students who just want to learn on their own time outside of school.

Unique summer camps are our newest offerings. We offer the most unique day camp for children in the Matanuska-Susitna Valley. Our first year offering, Essential Viking Camp was a roaring success and in 2024 we’re planning more camps. So stayed tuned for those camps!
