Join masterful forager Michele Harmeling and her special guest, kid forager, Walker on a 60 minute eye-opening walk through the woods looking at plants and asking “Can I eat this or will it kill me?”

On our walk, we’ll be observing many of Alaska’s edible spring plants with other like-minded wannabe forager kids and their parents. Kids will be surprised at all the local edible AND non-edible plants in our area!

We’ll talk about sustainable foraging, the proper way to collect plants, tools for foraging, books to carry with you, and where to forage locally. You’ll also pick up tips and tricks on drying and using your harvest.

Our Intro to Foraging Walk is a rain or shine event so be sure to dress for the weather! Please wear shoes or hiking boots you can get dirty, and bring a notebook and a camera to help you identify plants later on.

Dogs are not the best foraging partners, so we ask you to leave your dog at home.

Did you know Alaska is home hundreds of edible, and medicinal plants? And many others who aren’t so medicinal and edible!!

True story! On this walk, we’ll only scratch the surface of the useable wild plants growing near us. There’s just no way 60 minutes will cover every useable plant in the Matanuska Valley.

The location for our Intro to Foraging Walk tentatively planned for the Matanuska River Park. We will be meeting at the School District Parking lot at 3pm.

There are limited spots available so please grab a friend and come out foraging with us.

This class is focused on kids but parents are welcome and encouraged to tag along for the fun.

Please be sure to enter a good phone number and email address so we can contact you if our location changes. See you out foraging!!
